During the first 12 months of the pandemic, the total number of homeless deaths in Los Angeles County increased 56% from the previous 12 months. LA is currently home to about 66,000 homeless people, and the state accounts for a staggering 20 percent of all homeless Americans. “Nationally and even worldwide, housing is not a human right,” said Orozco, who has made the housing crisis a major focus of their organizational and operational work. . “Especially in a city like Los Angeles—where there are already built homes and big police budgets—action is needed to address homelessness at the care level.
