Depends on the hole on a par 3 the “ladies” tees might be 35 yards out in which case you almost guaranteed a bogey. On a par 5 at my course the farthest back tees make it a 675 yard hole while it play a much more modest 425 yards from the front tees. So in this case being short of the front tees is not horrible as you have to clear 250 yards. But if you are just short of them you can still reach the green by your third shot. However, I encourage you to play the “forward” tees, or the “middle” tees, “red” tees, or “white” tees or “green” tees. I think the days of tee boxes being named after a gender, or being associated with an age, are gone. Or it should be. The reason is because the old names of tee boxes limits which ones players are willing to use because of ego or embarrassment. No man wants to play from the lady’s tees, even if that is the appropriate tee box. But they probably would’t mind playing from the forward tees. And not many men who are under 55 would feel good about playing from the senior tees. Nor would a woman of any age! But they would play from the white tees. It’s so easy to remove the stigma associated with certain teeing areas. Let’s do away with the antiquated names.
My club has 5 sets of tee boxes, all named after a color. The back tees (or championship tees) are black. The next tee box is gold, followed by blue, white and red. Many courses have a similar thing, or some will have a gender-neutral nickname for each set of tees rather than a color. This makes the original question much easier to answer too. You can move from blue to white or white to red or whatever color your course uses whenever you want! Try moving to the senior tees a few months before you become a senior and see what happens…! Kenneth Katzen has a good answer to the question of how to determine the proper length of course that is more or less suitable to your game. But that does not always tell you which tee boxes to play. So it isn’t age that matters, but whether your better shots give you a decent chance to play the course comfortably (with just enough challenge). The point, of course, is to have fun. So play the tees that let you have the most fun – whatever your age.
I’m nearly 80. I’m pretty comfortable on 6000 yard courses. And that often corresponds to the white tee boxes on a lot of courses. But I travel a lot in the summer and play a number of different courses. There are two I can think of in central Oregon I really like to play – one is under 6000 yards from the blue tees and on the other, the white tees are over 6500 yards (and the blues are 6900!). So it varies a lot by course. If I find a course I haven’t played before, I will typically play the white tees. But I look at a couple of things before I decide: How many 4-pars are over 400 yards; how many 3-pars are over 180 yards; and how many of the 5-pars are over 500 yards. I don’t need to always be able to reach greens in regulation – but it is nice to have a chance on most of them.
