The lie angle of fairway woods might effect ball flight if too upright or too flat. If you are a slicer- you do not want a flat lie angle which would influence golf ball further to the right (for right handed golfers). Conversely- if you hook the ball ( ball curving left for right handed golfer) …you do not want an upright lie angle further influencing ball to the left. No! Because it’s your choice. Of course you can only use them from the tee box. Nowadays players use them on long holes because drivers have big heads and would be harder to hit effectively without tees. Few professionals use a tee on a par 3 hole — which you can see from the swath of divot marks on par 3 tee boxes. Whether wood or plastic, or even the brush type popular some years ago, the type of tee makes little difference. Golf is all about consistency and I would always recommend using castle type tees. You may need to experiment as to which height you prefer depending on which club you are using off the tee, but these types of tee take the guesswork out of teeing up as they only go into the ground as far as the castle part of the tee allows.
Golfers should use the tees that make the most sense to their games. I don’t care if you’re 25 or 65, if you can’t drive the ball over 200 yards, there is no value to playing from the middle or rear tees. If you drive the ball 275, there’s not as much value to playing the course from the front tees, unless you’re just working on your iron game and course management. So forget the labels on what tee is what. Use common sense. If you hit the ball 200 off the tee, and you’re never making it to the green in 2 on par fours, why wouldn’t you move forward? Golf isn’t supposed to beat you up, it’s supposed to be fun. If it’s not fun, change something to make it fun. You should move forward whenever you want to. Just try it once and see how it works for you.
Assuming that I do not have any golf pros reading this answer, I would say, YES, always tee up on any hole you are allowed to. Golf pros are able to control backspin and side spin, left to right and right to left. We as normal weekend warriors cannot do that. Par 3’s are holes that can boost your confidence because you can tee up with a club much more lofted than a driver or fairway wood. I cannot speak for anyone else, but for me, getting the ball on the putting surface on a par 3 is my goal. I generally can 2 putt without much difficulty. Plus a short par 3, say 140 yards, being able to tee up with a 9 or 8 iron and hitting it flush is a thing of beauty. That is the stuff that brings you back. Golf “snobbery” has created a false image of what golf should be for everyone. We’ve had the championship tees, the tournament tees, then the normal/members tees, then the ladies/seniors tees, and the seniors/juniors/ladies tees, and blah blah blah… And all those things have done a disservice to the game. We’re better today at noting this, but it’s still a long time coming.
