This is called “hitting it off the deck” and is extremely difficult and unless you are a single digit handicap and know how to do this shot, you should not attempt it. It is likely to be chunked, skulled, or otherwise mis-hit and the vast majority of the time you will do much better off with a 3 wood or hybrid, if not a 6-iron. A really good player will do it if they need some combination of longer distance than a 3 wood, low and penetrating ball flight, and lots of roll when the ball lands. But even really good players in a tournament will not attempt it because of the low probability of pulling it off. Bubba is a pro, and a top pro at that, and has an amazing bag of shots. But you are not Bubba.
For the past two or three years, they have been producing an extensive best driver list for the year with the subset of lower and higher swing speeds. They back it up with real players hitting drivers with their stock shaft. The stats they give even include dispersion. This is probably your best place to start. A driver is the only club intended to strike the ball as it begins its upswing from the bottom of the arc, which is why you hit it off of a tee. With a driver, you mentally always think of putting the ball just inside of your left foot, to catch it on the upswing. But you can also hit 3 woods and other woods, hybrids, and irons off a tee as well. Generally, the longer the shaft and the lower the loft, the harder a club is to hit off the fairway. So with a driver off the fairway, you have that going against you. It is, quite simply, the most difficult club in your bag to hit off the fairway. Now, add to that the fact that you are USED TO playing the ball forward in your stance, and catching it on the upswing from the bottom of your arc. Consequently, most amateurs who try this habitually line up the “driver off the deck” the same way, which is entirely wrong since you are NOT catching the ball on the upswing since it’s sitting on the grass, not a two inch tee. Another factor is you are likely to try and swing hard at it, which all things equal decreases the odds of good contact. So if you ARE going to try this shot, you play the driver like you would play a long iron, with the ball roughly in the center of your stance. I say “roughly” because depending on the player it might be a little forward or back, but just a little. It will NOT be off your left heel or your left instep.
