While traveling during the summer of 1981 when I was 22, I was staying for the night in a YMCA in Vancouver, Canada. There, I met a squash player who was about 50. However, that was mostly because I felt obligated to do that for him due to the tour and the free lunch. The worst part about it all was when I told a friend at university about that summer incident. He took great delight in informing me that maybe my shirtless photo would end up in a gay man’s magazine. I panicked at the thought and worried about it for weeks. In hindsight, it was an illogical concern. My gay host likely just wanted to fawn over my photo for a few years after our meeting. On a final note, what happened to me made me more sensitive to how I treated women over the following years, all because I myself had gotten a taste of what it was like to taken advantage of due to my physical appearance — something with which a lot of women are familiar!
