Needless to say, when I graduated as salutatorian of my high school class, many of my peers called me an Oreo for acting too white. Looking back, it was the little things like that that showed me how normal, productive families interact with each other. It set a precedent for excellence that I have never strayed from, and helped me get my life priorities straight. At the same time, many of my classmates lacked that drive. Many were involved in gangs, drugs, petty crimes, etc. at least four of my classmates were killed before they graduated, if they didn’t drop out first. I probably couldn’t tell you how many students at my school dropped out, then took a dirt nap afterwards. Gunshots were a common sound outside at nighttime, as were the shouts and jeers of neighborhood drunks and panhandlers. During the day, standard activities for most of my neighbors were sitting on the porch smoking, playing loud rap music, and playing basketball if you were more active. Otherwise, things like checking out books at the local library, tinkering with machine parts, and watching education documentaries on a beat-up old VCR… These were not very common habits in the hood, but things I did all the time.
