It’s a lot of work to wash sweaters, so I prefer dark sweaters or patterned ones. They don’t show the dirt as bad as a light colored one. Great question! We suggest washing every five to six wears. Although there are some that advocate washing as little as possible. In fact, the director of brand concepts and special projects for Levi Strauss & Co. washes his once every six months. I would call it a shirt. When I hear the word ‘sweater’ I think of clearly knitted items where each yarn thread is distinguishable on examination. The item in the photo is sportswear that appears to be made of knit material, but as the loop is so tightly produced, I wouldn’t really call it a sweater. It’s not like grandma is likely to make you one for the holidays. That said, my favorite is the Wonderful Wallaby from Cottage Creations. Sizes range from a child 2 to adult X-large. The pouch is easy to knit. The hood is optional. This can be knit in any kind of fiber you like (no acrylic please), change style of ribbing, add stripes, etc. I’ve made one for my grandson and a matching one for his teddy bear. The second method is to hand wash each sweater in the bathroom sink using a mild detergent in lukewarm water. Once rinsed of soap, I squeeze out as much excess water as I can before laying them out on the sweater racks. NOTE: I SQUEEZE the excess water from the sweaters, I do not wring or twist the sweaters to remove the water. That damages the knit fabric and pulls the sweater out of shape. Sometimes, I throw the sweaters in the bathtub and squeeze out the water by pressing them with my feet. This saves my hands from having to squeeze the water out manually.
I actually put my cashmere and wool in the washing machine *gasp* on the hand wash cycle and use a product by “The Laundress,” called “Wool and Cashmere” shampoo. It actually conditions the fibers, just like you would shampoo and condition your hair, unlike a detergent, which strips all the oils (including natural oils) from the wool and cashmere. I’ve been using it for at least 10 years. The sweaters end up softer than when they went into the machine. I will warn however that cheaper cashmeres do not fair well in the machine. Some of mine were eaten up inside the washing machine, but they weren’t quality yarns.
