As golfers become more skilled and eliminate early extension then you realize the correct way to swing irons is analogous to the hammer/nail one described above. When the club goes up in the backswing then you, as a consequence must go down and thus you get to use the ground force, the energy which you’ll apply to the ball through impact. This is described as the golfer “covering the ball” when hitting irons i.e. your centre of gravity remains slighty ahead of the ball, staying down in the shot and retaining your spine angle as you compress the ball and, consequently, avoid the “scooping” reflex which robs you of distance. You accept that the irons have sufficient loft to get the ball airborne (letting the club do the work so to speak). It’s akin to squeezing the ball from the turf as opposed to hitting the ball if that makes sense. It’s why pros and low handicap golfers, knowing how to swing properly, don’t use game improvement irons i.e. they want to use clubs that provide them with the most feedback, clubs that inform them that they’re hitting that sweet spot again and again and thus ensuring that they are maximizing their swing efficiency.
If you mean “drivers” of the golf ball, there are a few names that would pop up over different eras, and I will describe a few here that stand out, from the “older” days to now. Ben Hogan had arguably the greatest control of both trajectory and shape. There is a famous story of him hitting a narrow alley of fairway that no other player even attempted at the British Open in 1953. Jack Nicklaus also had great control and hit the ball MUCH further than his contemporaries in the 60’s and 70’s. Greg Norman would be at the top of any list, as he dominated the game in the late 80’s and 90’s, and is said to be the longest, straightest driver of the ball ever. And he used persimmon (wooden) clubs for a good majority of his career!
Note how the iron below at impact is generating a descending blow into the ball. Like a hammersmith skillfully hammering a nail into a piece of wood in one fluid and powerful motion. This is how divots are created. Note also how the shaft isn’t upright and is forward leaning creating a lower dynamic loft and thus more distance. The hands are ahead of the ball at impact. The tendency of shorter hitting iron players is that there is an instinctive reflex to try and help or scoop the ball into the air, the hands will be level with the ball or slightly behind to enable this. It’s a move which causes the dreaded early extension, a swing flaw, on the downswing i.e. when you try to “hit” the ball then when the club goes down then you must go up and thus you come out of your posture/spine angle and flip at the ball. This death move doesn’t create as much dynamic loft, the divot will be shallower with not as much distance and you’ll also be prone to shanking your irons.
