China is the only ancient civilization that is predominantly secular since the beginning of written history. (Will Durant ) Confucius questioned the premises of religion by saying “you don’t even know about life, why do you talk about what happens after death?” in 500 BC, and his axiom of “a scholar should not talk about gods or ghosts” became part of the Code of Conduct within the Chinese government and the intellectual elites. It was in the official test material in the Imperial examination from ~ 600 AD – 1900 AD, although a rudimentary form of the Examination started back in the Han Dynasty around 200 BC. So while the Pope anointed kings and the Papal Nuncio played politics at the European Courts, religious leaders never had a chance to get inside the government house in China’s polity in the past 2,500 years. Religion in China has always been treated as a private affair, the same way one is allowed to be superstitious or stupid or psychologically weak, or just peculiar. Every couple of generation, the organized religion would get into trouble with the secular government and get itself suppressed for a while. Stuff like the emperor wanted to live forever, the secular government said you need to appoint your successor, the Daoist monk said there’s no need and I could help you live forever, and here was the magic pill for you (in exchange for gold and promotion), the emperor took too much of it and died. The incoming emperor would then execute the monks and close down the shop for a while. Again and again, for at least a hundred times in history. And the reason for suppression is just too easy to find, starting from “lying to the public”… Geez, you just make it too easy.
I never saw this happen—but I can imagine someone insisting on keeping their hat on, and my grandmother standing in her front hall looking at them with a displeased expression on her face. Nothing would be said for awhile. Then she would say “I guess you can’t stay.” These days we don’t wear hats, but we seem to bring the world’s anxiety inside with us. We invite it right on in. In general, I think the etiquette for wearing white shirts outside of the office is pretty relaxed. I don’t think there are many occasions where it would be considered inappropriate to wear one, except maybe a formal event like a wedding or funeral. Other than that, I think they can be worn pretty much anywhere! Because you are asking a guy who fundamentally doesn’t believe the world is created in 6 days to modify his lifestyle according to what you believe. China may put on a bland Buddha face for you because he wants to be polite and get along with you, but asking him to change his lifestyle because you are hearing voices is just asking too much.
Yes, I used to dress like The Pope at work every day. I got some strange looks on the bus on the way to work though. My grandmother had a line she used when one of the men in the family came into her house and left his hat on his head. Take your hat off and stay awhile, she would say. It was the early 1960s. She wanted her house to be a refuge from the outside world. A place where the anxiety and hustle of the world were left outside. When you came to her house, there was a series of things you did on the way in. During the World Series, my uncles knew they’d better enjoy their pie and lemonade and get right back on the road again. My grandmother lived in a small town that was at the junction between two major cross-country highways. Her house was on the way, wherever you were going. And there was always a welcome at her house, and a meal at dinnertime, and a bed for the night if you needed one. Leaving your hat on would have implied that you were planning to leave soon. That, in turn, would have suggested you were not pleased with her hospitality. Did not like her pie or appreciate her lemonade. I never knew anyone reckless enough to keep their hat on in her house. In an era when every man over the age of 21 wore a hat every day—everyone took off their hat in the house of a woman they respected. They left their dust and dirt, their tools and their work, and their anxiety—outside.
