Dating in New York can be a drag, but it can also be an opportunity to get dressed up. Designer Batsheva Hay and director-writer Maya Singer teamed up to show that comically harrowing experience in their latest short film, Unhinged. In the film, Saturday Night Live darling Chloe Fineman plays a woman going through the ups and downs of New York’s romantic scene in a rotation of the finest new Batsheva frills from the new prefall 2023 collection. Hay and Singer, who are also friends, came up with the idea while talking about online dating and “the popularity of the word ‘unhinged,’” according to Hay. “The whole idea started from the title, which is somehow often the case with me,” adds Singer. The duo tapped Fineman, who has modeled for Hay in the past and has worn the designer’s clothes. “Everyone knows Chloe is funny, but she really brought out the layers of the sort of everygirl.” Another familiar face made a cameo, as well: Nico Tortorella of Younger and The Walk Dead: World Beyond who played the handsome suitor of Fineman’s. From attending Paris Fashion Week decked out in fresh from the runway looks, to pulling rare archive pieces from the likes of Azzedine Alaïa and Thierry Mugler, Kylie Jenner’s sartorial game has had a serious glow-up this year. Most recently, she was seen wearing one of the most popular trends to emerge from the fall 2022 collections. Spotted out at dinner in Los Angeles at celeb-favorite restaurant Giorgio Baldi (Rihanna is a regular), the 25-year-old beauty mogul delivered a head-to-toe leather ensemble. Throughout the film, Fineman shows up to various dates at the East Village bistro Pardon My French in a series of Hay’s signatures: florals, exaggerated collars, puffed sleeves, and plenty of ruffles. These scenes are accented by a nervous score produced by Matt Allchin and Attawalpa’s Luis Felber that plays into the anxiousness of dating. While inquiring about a date’s job (“meme designer”!), Fineman sports a leopard-print frock with a black bib and pearl buttons. When comparing dating to “cans of soup,” she wears a fuchsia dress with an enormous collar and shoulders. During a sequence of dramatic moments, Fineman floats above the Eiffel Tower in a classic black retro dress. (Singer credits these dreamlike scenes to the 3D creation tool, Unreal Engine, which she learned about while participating in the Tribeca Film Festival/Epic Games “Writing in Unreal” workshop in November 2021).
